Kōdō at Roedde House Museum

This April we were so pleased to partner with Roedde House Museum for an intimate gathering leading guests to engage their senses while learning about kōdō, the Japanese Way of Incense.

In the beautiful Roedde House parlour and dining room, guests were able to participate in a kumikō – a form of incense appreciation exercise developed around the Muromachi period (1338–1573). Everyone had the opportunity to experience and compare several types of highly fragrant woods in a game that incorporates seasonal and literary references. This session was held in the ryūrei 立礼 style — seated at a long table rather than on tatami mats. We love this accessible format as it makes for a perfect introduction for those brand new to kōdō as well as a different style of experience for seasoned kumikō guests.

Thank you to all the guests who joined us — especially those who came to experience kōdō for the very first time. Our deepest thanks to the staff and volunteers at Roedde House Museum for inviting Dōjin Arts again this year to share Japanese cultural arts with the community and for their help in making this happen.
